Quick answer

A cut-off is the minimum score needed to qualify for the next stage in your category. Compare your marks with several previous years: above the highest cut-off is a safe zone, above the average is a good chance, and within the range is borderline. For example, the UPSC CSE Prelims General cut-off was 87.98 in 2024 and 75.41 in 2023 (out of 200).

What decides the cut-off

  • Number of vacancies — more posts usually mean a lower cut-off.
  • Difficulty of the paper and normalization across shifts.
  • Number of candidates who appeared and their performance.
  • Category-wise reservation and minimum qualifying marks set by the recruiting body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a safe score?+

A score above the highest cut-off of recent years for your category is generally safe, but cut-offs can rise when vacancies fall or the paper is easy.

What was the UPSC Prelims 2024 cut-off for General?+

87.98 out of 200 in GS Paper I (EWS 85.92, OBC 87.28, SC 79.03, ST 74.23).

When is the official cut-off released?+

Most bodies publish it with the result; UPSC releases category-wise cut-offs after the final result of the cycle.

Is the qualifying mark the same as the cut-off?+

No. Qualifying marks are a fixed minimum (e.g. CTET 60%), while the cut-off is the score of the last selected candidate and changes every year.

My exam is not listed. Can I still use it?+

Yes. Choose “Other exam” and enter previous cut-offs from the official notice or our cut-off posts.

Requirements differ between recruitments. Always follow the official notification of the exam you are applying for.
