Quick answer

For SSC CHSL (LDC/JSA) the typing test requires 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi on a computer. Data Entry Operator posts require a data entry speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour, tested in a 15-minute test. This free test shows your gross speed, net speed (after errors) and accuracy so you can practise for the skill test.

The Staff Selection Commission conducts the skill test for posts such as Data Entry Operator and Lower Division Clerk. Candidates are required to type with speed and accuracy on a computer. Regular practice of at least thirty minutes every day helps to improve both speed and accuracy. Do not look at the keyboard while typing and keep your fingers on the home row keys. Read the passage carefully and avoid spelling mistakes because every full mistake reduces the net speed.

Gross speed, net speed and accuracy

  • Gross WPM counts all words typed per minute.
  • Net WPM subtracts words with mistakes — exams judge you on net speed.
  • Accuracy is the share of words typed correctly. Aim for 95% or higher before pushing speed.

How to improve your typing speed

  • Keep fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and do not look at the keyboard.
  • Practise 20–30 minutes every day rather than long sessions once a week.
  • For Hindi, practise the same layout you will get in the exam (usually Mangal / Inscript or Remington Gail as stated in the notification).
  • Slow down to cut errors first; speed improves on its own with accuracy.
