About the scheme
Introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs from the academic year 2006-07, the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme for the Wards of Central Armed Police Forces & Assam Rifles encourages higher technical and professional education among the families of uniformed personnel. Every year, 2,000 new scholarships are distributed equally between female and male candidates, in addition to continuing renewal cases. The financial assistance directly supports students pursuing recognised professional degree programmes such as engineering, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, management, and computer applications.

Who can apply (eligibility)
- Must be a dependent ward or widow of deceased, disabled, retired, or serving CAPF or Assam Rifles personnel (personnel below officer rank for retired/serving).
- Must be pursuing a first professional degree course recognised by AICTE, MCI, or UGC (such as B.Tech, MBBS, BDS, B.Ed, BBA, BCA, B.Pharma, B.Sc Nursing/Agriculture, MBA, MCA).
- Fresh applicants must have secured at least 60% marks in the Minimum Entry Qualification (10+2, Diploma, or Graduation).
- Renewal applicants must secure at least 50% marks in each subsequent academic year of their professional programme.
- A maximum of two children per family can avail the benefits of the scholarship.
- Applicants are eligible regardless of their marital status.
- Lateral entry students joining the second year of a technical bachelor degree after a diploma are eligible.
Who cannot apply
- Wards of civilian employees of CAPFs, Assam Rifles, or State/UT Police personnel.
- Students pursuing courses through correspondence or distance education.
- Students already receiving any other scholarship, stipend, or financial assistance.
- Candidates who have previously availed benefits under the PMSS.
- Students pursuing diploma courses that do not lead to a degree, or general master's degree courses other than MBA and MCA.
- Students studying abroad or admitted to institutions not approved under the UGC Act, AICTE, or MCI.
- Students who change their course or college and take fresh admission in a subsequent academic year.
